Apple Roses

Cinnamony-sugary-appley goodness in a bite size pretty package.

I wish I could give credit to where I found this recipe – I did not make it up but I did follow some pictures I found on pinterest that were in a different language.  If someone knows where this came from, let me know and I’ll give them credit!

Ingredients:

Puff pastry – cut into 1 cm strips

2-3 apples

3 TBSP Cinnamon

3 TBSP Sugar

lemon juice to keep the apples from browning

Directions

1) Cut the apple in half and then in half again (so quarters).  With the flat side down, cut the apple into thin slices (like 1-3 mm thick).  They should look like half ovals.  Put a bit of lemon juice on all the slices to prevent browning.

2) Mix the cinnamon and sugar.  In a pan, over low heat, sprinkle the cinnamon and sugar and lay the apple slices flat on top.  Cook until the apple slices are soft and bendable.

3) Lay the puff pastry strips out.  Put a slice of apple on top of the puff pastry strip – the straight side of the apple slice should be parallel to the bottom of the puff pastry strip.  Lay another slice right next to slightly overlapping.  Continue to lay the apple slices side by side, slightly overlapping, until you get to the end of the strip.

4) Starting at one end of the puff pastry strip, roll the strip with the apples in side into a spiral (it would look like a cinnamon bun on the bottom, and the apple rose on top).  Put roses on a baking sheet.

5) After you roll up all of the roses, sprinkle more cinnamon and sugar on top.  Bake at 350 until the puff pastry is golden brown (about 15-20 min).  Check on them often so the cinnamon/sugar/apple doesn’t burn and get smoky.
